GU/MSB-Brooklyn Center—A College with History

Birthday party for MSBGlobe University/Minnesota School of Business-Brooklyn Center (GU/MSB) opened in 1989 and moved to its present facility in 1999. It operates jointly with six other Minnesota School of Business (MSB) and five Globe University (GU) campuses to share programs, corporate support services and mission. Brooklyn Center was the first branch campus of MSB.

A school with 19th century roots

Minnesota School of Business was founded in 1877 in downtown Minneapolis. Students learned bookkeeping, shorthand, English and penmanship. For 12 years, it was known as the Archibald Business College, after its founder A. R. Archibald. In 1888, it became the Minnesota School of Business. By 1893, five teachers were training up to 400 students a year. The mission of the school, as reported in Isaac Atwater’s History of the City of Minneapolis, Minnesota, published in 1893, was to “fit young men for remunerative employment and to assist them in obtaining it.”

A tradition of moving with the times

MSB was one of the first schools to teach students to use Stenotype machines, calculators, adding machines and typewriters. Over the years, it added programs in health science, legal science, information technology and multimedia and design. In 2000, the school began offering classes online and established complete online degree and diploma programs in 2005. It has earned a reputation as a school that provides students with cutting-edge training in areas valued by employers.

Staying with our historical mission

In 1993, the school moved its main campus to Richfield, MN, an inner ring suburb of Minneapolis. Its core mission remains the same—preparing people for rewarding careers and helping them find the jobs that will start them on their paths. We still work with students and graduates to find them “remunerative employment” with a strong Career Services Department. MSB, along with Globe University, is part of the Globe Education Network, a consortium that also includes Duluth Business University, Institute of Production and Recording, Minnesota School of Cosmetology and Utah Career College. Each school has a similar mission—to prepare students for successful careers.
